virtual holiday auction

As Zoom get togethers are again expected to replace large family gatherings and parties this holiday season, consider holding a Virtual Holiday Auction to liven up your celebration.

This activity is modeled after the “camp version” of a Dutch Auction in which campers bring miscellaneous items to the lodge and compete with other campers to see if they have the items called in the “auction” to earn their cabin points. While the Virtual Holiday Auction won’t have the “mess hall” setting, the fun and competition will have both kids and kids at heart feeling the holiday joy.

The Basics

  • Ask each participant to gather no more than 15 items to bring to the “auction” that are either used around the holiday season or are associated with Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa.
  • The auctioneer (game organizer) will call out random items. Participants who can display that item on the screen will earn points.
  • Point values can vary at the auctioneer’s discretion. For example, award one point to any person who can produce wrapping paper. If the wrapping paper has reindeer on it, award two points.

Wait, there’s more! Consider other fun twists and surprises to add some additional excitement to the game.

Optional Virtual Holiday Auction Criteria

  • Announce the game at the beginning of the virtual gathering and give all participants five minutes to gather whatever holiday items they can get their hands on. (If participants aren’t back in front of their screens in five minutes, begin taking any gifts gathered away in 15-second increments.)
  • In addition to auction items, consider awarding participants for other reasons. Who’s wearing a holiday sweater? Anyone drinking out of a festive mug? Who’s sporting something plaid or wearing red socks?
  • If you’re playing the Virtual Holiday Auction with a fun and adventurous group, throw in some talent competitions. Who can sing the best carol? Who can touch their nose with their tongue or belch the loudest? (Yes, some consider these talents!) Consider awarding points to the best competitor while offering other participants consolation points for putting themselves out there.
