How to throwback on a Thursday

We’ve all seen the Facebook and Instagram posts of childhood pictures and memories swirling around. I look at these photos and can’t help but wonder why throwback Thursday hasn’t faded like other social media fads.

Then it occurs to me, the answer is nostalgia.

Here are a few tips to make sure your throwback Thursday is a hit.


  1. Understand your target audience. What age group are you trying to reach? What region are you aiming for? These questions are important because different cohorts have different languages. Not every baby boomer will understand the term ‘lit’ and not every millennial will understand what ‘dapper’ means. Understanding your target audience is the first step before doing anything else.
  2. Use a universal memory. Once you know who you want to receive your message, choose memory that most people in your target audience can relate to. If you are targeting millennials mention the 90s. If your target audience is broader than that, cute animals always get a positive emotional response. Read about why cute sells here.
  3. Pictures are your friends. It’s not throwback Thursday without an image. Memes tend to work best, however; an old photo of a company when it first started or the CEO as a kid will work just as well.
  4. Let time pass. Do not use a day from last week as your throwback. If an event happened a month or two ago, it is okay to use that as a throwback to promote future events. If you are truly going for that nostalgic feeling, you have to go back a few years.
  5. Don’t forget the hashtag #throwbackthursday or #tbt to set the tone for your post.

With these tips, your throwback Thursday will be a success.
