Every job has characteristics that make it unique. Every job has stress. Every job has its pros and cons. PR jobs are no different. Recently, I’ve been thinking about the things that remind communications pros we’re all in the same boat. Here are 20 of my favorites:

  1. Each day starts and ends with caffeine. Pick your poison.
  2. Your thoughts are structured in 140 characters or less.
  3. Two main arguments among coworkers involve the Oxford comma and how many spaces to use between sentences.
  4. Crises energize you.
  5. You’ve been accused of being a member of the Grammar Police. You wear the badge proudly.
  6. Any lunch, happy hour or date is prefaced with, “I apologize in advance for constantly looking at my phone. I’m trying to quit.”
  7. Any mention of the word “spin” makes you cringe.
  8. You find yourself watching live speeches or press conferences (and taking notes) instead of the big game or series finale you’ve been looking forward to all week.
  9. Headphones and inside jokes are an essential part of each day.
  10. You keep a separate notebook and pen in your car and by your bed. Great ideas come at all hours of the day and night.
  11. You’ve mastered the art of saying the same thing a dozen ways.
  12. Two words: red pens.
  13. You time everything you do in 10 minute increments. Because Timeslips.
  14. Manifestations of client events and projects (past and present) appear in your dreams.
  15. Your mom still doesn’t understand what you really do for a living.
  16. Client service: In one day you’ve worked for a nonprofit, alcohol brand, chemical company, manufacturing plant and healthcare system.
  17. You mentally edit everything you read. Restaurant menus are no exception.
  18. Post-it notes are your ultimate frienemy.
  19. You’re convinced if multitasking was an Olympic sport, you’d be the gold-medal favorite.
  20. You’ve got 99 problems but a pitch ain’t one.
