Program promotes diversity and inclusion in strategic communications

CINCINNATI (March 30, 2017) – The E.W. Scripps Company and Vehr Communications are partnering to create the Cincinnati Strategic Communications Leadership Program, a paid eight- to 12-week summer internship intended to promote diversity and inclusion in strategic communications.

The program is open to college students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in corporate communications, journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, strategic communications or related industries. Although priority will be given to minority students, the internship is open to all qualified candidates without regard to race, gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, veteran status or any other characteristic prohibited by state or local law.

“Strategic communications work requires a wide range of diverse voices in order to best serve its many audiences, and our goal is to attract young people into our field who can lend us new perspectives,” said Carolyn Micheli, vice president of corporate communications and investor relations for Scripps. “This program is designed to give a student the benefit of a variety of strategic communications experiences while giving us the benefit of their experiences.”

Splitting time between Scripps and Vehr each week, the chosen candidate will be exposed to a wide variety of agency and corporate experiences, including client relations, media relations, social media strategy, inbound marketing, corporate communications and more. For individuals outside the Greater Cincinnati area, a stipend will be awarded to help supplement housing and travel needs for the length of the program.

Applicants must submit an updated professional resume and cover letter demonstrating their interest in the program as well as a letter of recommendation from a current or past instructor at the college or university in which they are enrolled. Deadline for submission is April 14.
